You Are More Than A Body
We often think of our bodies as our true selves. Bodies can be seen and touched, yet they are just shells that we inhabit for a short time. The Bible tells us that the invisible soul is what gives us life. “For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.” (James 2:26) The body is doomed to age and crumble, but the soul lives on (1 Cor. 15:50-57).
Since the soul is eternal, we should never trade away its fate for any pleasure of this world. “For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? For what can a man give in return for his soul?” (Mark 8:35-36) Satan will never appear before us and overtly give us the choice of salvation or the world, but we are still forced to make that choice. Sadly, many trade their soul away for far less than the world.
After your body dies, your existence will not end. It is only a transition into the next stage of life. 2 Corinthians 5:9-11 tells us that we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, where we will receive what is due according to the choices we made in the body. There are only two outcomes: be rewarded as a faithful servant of the Most High God, or be banished from His presence and condemned to die eternally. With this knowledge, we should recognize the importance of the choices we make each day. “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Matt. 10:28) Take care of your soul! Today’s decisions will affect you for eternity.
